BLM auction nets $24 million
FARMINGTON The U.S. Bureau of Land Management auctioned off 37 federal lease areas in its October quarterly sale, netting more than $24 million.
Bids for 28 parcels in New Mexico brought in more than $23 million. Seven parcels in Texas brought in $500,000, and two parcels in Oklahoma netted over $458,000.
The oral auction took place Oct. 17 at the BLM's New Mexico state office in Santa Fe. A total of 38 bidders registered.
No San Juan County companies won parcels in the auction. Companies that submitted winning bids included KHL Inc. of Albuquerque, Martin Fuels Co. of Nacogdoches, Texas and J Bar Cane Inc. of Stanley.
Leases are awarded for a period of 10 years and as long thereafter as there is production in paying quantities. The revenue from the sale of federal leases, as well as the 12.5 percent royalties collected from the production of those leases, is shared between the federal government and the states. Fifty-two percent of the revenue generated goes to the federal government and 48 percent is returned to the state where leasing occurs.
New Mexico will receive over $11 million from the October sale, the BLM said.
The next BLM federal oil and gas lease sale is scheduled for Jan. 16, 2013, at the BLM's New Mexico state office, 301 Dinosaur Trail in Santa Fe. For more information, visit www.blm.gov/nm/oilandgas.
